By Nick Dalgety
Dave Barrett is the owner of an artisan cheese business, located in the Upper Moutere, about a 40-minute drive from Nelson.
He possesses two great cheese brands; Thorvald made from sheep milk cheese and Little River cheese from local A2 milk. The cheesemaker, originally from France, is Francis.
You can purchase the cheese from their own retail outlet called The Junction, else at the Nelson Market or through other reputable nationwide outlets. They are a member of the Moutere Artisans.
About the Author
Nick Dalgety is a Kiwi born in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. In recent times my wife and I have made Nelson in the top of the South Island home.
My day job involves working with people making a living from land and sea. In my spare time my passion is taking pictures that celebrate what is iconic about Aotearoa New Zealand. Inevitably this involves discovering amazing people, in their special place making and doing what they do best.
When travelling overseas, I often seek out similar experiences. I created Provenance101 to share these experiences.

Experience Nelson
Nelson played a valuable role in the history of New Zealand. It forms an important part of the top of the South Island, referred to as the prow of the Island canoe by Iwi. It is a region that provided essential merchandise and food of course for the West Coast during the gold rush era…
Experience The West Coast
The West Coast: the place where my mother was born and where we spent most of our childhood holidays. Wild and rain swept and where you get a sense of the way it used to be in early days New Zealand. A region founded on blood, sweat and tears where you made a living from…
Experience Ellis Creek Farm
The Thorpe family farm Lowline angus cattle in East Takaka, a sub region of Golden Bay. I had the pleasure of meeting up with Jonathan Thorpe and his wife Meredith on the farm in mid-2021. A special time as the Thorpes gathered eggs and avocados along with feeding out to the cattle in the upper…
Experience The Pear Orchard
Timo and Olivia own and run The Pear Orchard Lodge. Boutique accommodation situated only 20-minutes from Nelson with the Richmond Hills as a backdrop and overlooking the Waimea Plains. A babbling creek feeds their pond and the property supports a range of organic crops and farm animals. They also produce a unique honey from their…
Travel to Australia
Australia, a vast country just across the Tasman Sea from us. Although I visited briefly when young, I had little or no contact until more recently. I had heard great stories of the provenance of the Barossa Valley in South Australia – check out Extra-ordinary Everyday Barossa. Two recent trips provided me with better insight…
Travel to India
India, a country that will one day soon have the largest population in the world. Loved travelling here with my wife Cheryl and close friends in 2016. First landing in Chennai on the east coast and experiencing the amazing work of Christian outreach to the challenged women of this city. Over to the west coast,…
Travel to China
China. A country steeped in history and a culture that contrasts greatly with our own. Here I am travelling down the Yangtze River, passing by the place on the river where two kiwi ladies in the late 1800’s took a Chinese Gooseberry cutting that in time led to the famous Heyward kiwifruit variety! Given the dramatic increase…
Travel to Israel
Israel nestles in what is commonly referred to as the fertile crescent, the touch-point for Europe, Asia and Africa. In my view, where human life began. It is also the homeland of the Jewish people dating back some 3,500 years. It is really important we dig deep into history to understand the realities of today. My…
Travel to the Middle East
The Middle East is a land we often read about in the newspapers. It was great to visit with two of my children and close friends in 2008. Initially we landed in Beirut the capital city of Lebanon then up to the mountains to stay with a family friend. After spending time on the coast…
