To A Hungry Soul Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet

By Nick Dalgety

A weary man I came across in India

Are you weary? Have all the paths you have walked down led to a dead-end? Do you hunger and thirst for something that truly satisfies yet has you desirous for more?

This man in the photo is battling with life. He is weary and thirsty. I came across him while travelling in India with my wife and friends.

Here is a short proverb in the Bible that spoke to me:

A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb, but to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet. [PROVERBS 27:7]

The honeycomb speaks of the sweetness of drawing from the spiritual truths contained in God’s living Word.

For me this truth comes to life in Psalm 19 where the psalmist shows such passion for God’s law, testimonies, statutes, commandments and judgments. Here we read:

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple… more to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. [PSALM 19:7,10]

Back to Proverbs. When we become satisfied, we can get lazy in our ways and take the blessings of life for granted. However, when we are in desperate need we will find even the bitter things sweet for we are crying out to fill the void within.

I think this man resting on his bicycle would even find the bitter things sweet.

Can I suggest there is a Person who we can turn to. We can trust Him to meet our temporal and our eternal needs. His name; Yeshua. He knows what it is like to be hungry and thirsty.

Think of Yeshua’ experience being tested for 40 days in the desert and His time of agony in the Garden of Gethsemane just before going to the cross.

Trust Him. He has been there. We can rely on Him.
