Nelson played a valuable role in the history of New Zealand. It forms an important part of the top of the South Island, referred to as the prow of the Island canoe by Iwi. It is a region that provided essential merchandise and food for the West Coast during the gold rush era in the 1800’s.
My wife’s family settled in the Nelson region in the 1840’s and our family settled on the West Coast in the 1860’s. I love the artisans of Nelson, especially those active in the food and beverage sector.
Two great ways that these artisans meet with the local community are through the Moutere Artisans and the Nelson Market, noted below.
